The Expat’s Step-by-Step Guide to getting a Driving License in Sweden

Sweden has a structured path for getting your driver’s license. The process is identical for Swedish citizens and foreign residents alike. Follow these three main milestones to succeed:

1

Permit & Eye Test

Apply for a driving permit (Körkortstillstånd) at Transportstyrelsen. You must also book an eye test (synintyg) at an optician or driving school to complete the application.

2

Mandatory Safety Training

Complete two mandatory risk courses before booking your exams: Risk 1 (theory course on drugs, alcohol, and fatigue) and Risk 2 (skid track practice/halkbana). Both are widely available in English.

3

Theory & Practical Tests

Book your exams via Trafikverket. The theory exam is fully translated into English. You can also request an English-speaking examiner or a professional translator for your practical driving exam.

Rules for Exchanging Foreign Driving Licenses in Sweden

EU / EEA Driving Licenses

Valid driving licenses issued in any EU or EEA country are fully valid in Sweden for as long as they remain valid. If you become permanently resident in Sweden, you can choose to exchange your home license directly for a Swedish one without any exams or safety training.

Non-EU / EEA Driving Licenses

Licenses issued outside the EU/EEA (e.g. USA, UK, India, Canada) are valid for exactly one year after you register in the Swedish population register (folkbokföring). To continue driving after the first year, you must go through the complete Swedish licensing process, including both Risk courses and exams.
